Today we packed all of our belongings and boarded the bus for a 3 hour drive to La Fortuna where we will spend the night. There are many on the trip that have motion sickness and certainly had a problem with the steep curves we encountered going down the mountain – but attitudes have been great! Our devotion today came from Philippians 3 – again – right on target! With the majority of our mission work complete – we wanted to maintain the spirit of unity, the desire to serve, and keep our eyes on the lookout for God’s hand and provision. We need to be aware of Satan’s attempts to bring us down. Paul encouraged believers that it is not deeds that God desires but the righteous living – we must not boast or have confidence in our own flesh. Our daily focus should be knowing Christ - counting all else rubbish. So much of our journey has been a faith walk and God has powerfully shown His faithfulness to each of us this week. We discussed faith and desiring to become more and more like Him! These devotion times have been great – just looking at what God has said and applying it to today and when we get home. Susan got up and spoke to the students – she shared that every day we have a choice to make – to fully engage – have a positive attitude – or pull back in negativity and just not engage in life at all. Her words were so impactful to the group – over and over we heard the students at various crossroads say – I choose…..(a positive choice). Great encouragement!
Our first stop on the way was a small store on top of the mountain. There was a huge hill that the students immediately ran down – it was straight down!!! The way they ran and played - you would think they grew up in a town with no hills! The ride was beautiful – mountains, rolling hills, fields of pineapple, coffee, cows, more cows, flowers, unusual vegetation, houses on cliffs, the students could not take it all in! The roads are not wide – but our bus driver has 20 years of experience – Drew kept him straight!
The next stop was at a magnificent church and gardens in Zarcero. The shrubbery in front of the church had one man that groomed these for the last 20 years. These were 15 plus foot shrubs are in the shapes of an elephant, tunnels, monkeys, etc. The students played all in the gardens. No one expected what they saw when they entered the church. It had a cathedral ceiling. The primary religion in Costa Rica is Catholic. The church had paintings on the walls and ceiling. There was a man painting and repairing the ceiling art. It is a grand church. The stained glass windows are beautiful. Elizabeth M. explained the altar and the candles. Most students had never seen anything remotely that spectacular. It literally took your breath away and drew you to worship!
We still had a little over 2 hours left on the drive. Some of the students played games while others slept. Courtney has introduced the team to a variety of random games – Brandon told her she had more games than Hasbro! Finally we arrived in La Fortuna. The place we are staying tonight is simply beautiful. The soil is so rich in the area which is evident in vast variety of flowers and trees - they are so vivid, unique, and beautiful. We quickly had lunch – lasagna, fish, and salad – and of course – rice and beans. No meal is complete without them.
The entire way to the hotel we could see the volcano in the distance; however, clouds were significantly covering the top. Right when we got off the bus – they parted. The hotel workers encouraged us to take pictures quickly before the clouds settled back on it – they were not very optimistic that we would see much. After photos were taken everyone had about 5 minutes to settle in their rooms and we headed off to hike a trail which led up a mountain to see the volcano closer and some of the lava from the 1992 explosion. What a hike! We walked on large trails through the rainforest – there were orchids, ferns, and bamboo scattered all around as well as unique other flowers. Jimmy stopped us at several points and explained trees, flowers, and the landscape. He showed pictures of the eruption and talked about the volcano today. It is still active – it stopped spitting fire about 5 months ago – so no one knows what to expect next.
The last 5 – 10 minutes of the hike was steep and there were difficult stairs and rocks to climb to be able to see the lake and volcano. There was such team unity – no one was left behind – all the team members pulled each other up to the top so all could see the volcano and the lake. The clouds stayed lifted the entire time – it was amazing! Again – creation testified to a mighty Creator who is not only AWESOME – but never ceases to thrill and delight! Creation has over and over again spoken to this group!
The climb down was really tough – there was a steep staircase – the students lined the stairway and sang Praise Concert songs as they held the hands of those that needed help – it was such a special sight – the entire senior class loving and helping each other - I truly do not think anyone will forget the bond at that moment – all in one accord singing praises and unifying to help the body of Christ – it was a precious moment – a witness to Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

As the last of the team members exited the trail – it began to rain – we never had a clear view of the volcano again – God’s blessings and provision again prevailed! We missed the rain and saw the volcano with perfect timing! We are all amazed at how He is blessing us! Jimmy is too!
Another highlight was around the corner – literally – we went and swam in natural hot springs. This water was heated by the volcano. What a blast! There were several “pools” you could swim and they were varying degrees of heat. It was so much fun and helped all the aching muscles from the previous three days of work.
Exhausted – we loaded the bus and headed back to the hotel – yes – for chicken, fish, rice, beans, or a hamburger. Most of the team went straight to bed after they ate – others hung out by the pool and visited. Again – Hasbro made them play a game – this time it was to tell random facts about themselves. These students have been together for years and yet knew so little about each other – it was fun to listen to!
Finally, they were ready to call it a night – another blessing! It rained hard on the tin roof most of the night. At first it was loud – then it became soothing. We were beyond exhausted.
I have loved every minute of the work we have done this week. I have loved seeing the students literally broken by their time with the children. Certainly today was not better – just different. Since this is the first time for most of the students to travel beyond North and South Carolina – the landscape, flowers and mountains are blowing their minds. Psalm 104:24 (Amplified Bible) says, 24O Lord, how many and varied are Your works! In wisdom have You made them all; the earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures. This is what they are saying – often not verbally – but it is all over their faces. They cannot take it in. Over and over we have said today – He spoke this into existence. What a mighty God we serve! A God so powerful that since He can speak this into being He can certainly empower us to fulfill our call – our need to go back and live fully and completely for Him.

Today was humbling and I cannot wait to share with you all that God did! We had breakfast at the hotel and headed to Guarari. We began with our team devotion again in Philippians 2. Several of the points we discussed included putting others needs before ourselves, humbling ourselves and esteeming others. A challenge was issued to really look for ways to put this into practice and they really did! Each day has been so relevant to our teams needs. Today is very hot and this is going to be a severely poor area we will be working. Paul encouraged them to do everything without complaining or grumbling. Today is going to be hard – and they will need to keep this thought before them at all times. We are here to be light bearers – putting forth the Word of Hope – our attitudes and reactions have such an opportunity to shine. In addition to the work we hope to accomplish, we also want to encourage the pastor and his family. We need to be very careful to guard our actions and words keeping team members encouraged.

The housing changed drastically along the drive. Many homes would be condemned in the states. They were small, housing 5 or more family members with poorly affixed tin roofs. The bus got very quiet – eyes were wide! We pulled up beside a small yellow concrete house. Our job today is painting a portion of the parsonage. We met in the church behind the parsonage – this was a small building with wooden benches that could seat maybe 70 people. It was fenced in with a small play area out front. There was a tiny kitchen where ladies were busy fixing lunch. Jimmy took half the team to begin painting the walls and scraping paint off the bars that surrounded the house. It was hot! We had just begun our work when police came on the street – with rather large guns. A robbery had just occurred – eyes were wide – but the excitement ended with no consequence.

We spent several hours painting and scraping the home. The odor was a little strong and when scraping the paint was flying. We had brought towels to donate and had meant to leave half at the Abraham Project. But in our disorganization – we had not taken them. What we did not realize was God was providing them for this project. The students tied the towels around their faces – they looked like bandits. We painted the walls a bright yellow and the iron was painted a dark green. The home looked so nice freshened up. Again – we needed the provision of towels – the student had paint all over them- it was great to have the towels to clean up.

Many people stood at a distance on the street corners watching. This is such a poor area – I would love to know what they were thinking and saying to one another. The pastor so desires to be a beacon of hope – to offer the good news of Jesus in an area that seems to have no hope. Everyone worked diligently – they are so engaged in the mission part of this trip– many are disappointed not to have another day.

The ladies served a wonderful lunch of tuna salad, rice and vegetables, and chips. It was very good! We are learning to embrace the food. Most meals are a consada with a choice chicken, fish, or steak. Every meal has rice and beans. Usually at mealtime they are so hungry from all the work – they just are glad to eat! We quickly cleaned up and set up for Bible School – Chelsea H and Chynna had spent the morning arranging everything so we could move quickly.

At first, we only had a few children. The pastor Susan, Courtney, Erin, and Jimmy began walking the neighborhood and inviting children to join us. They were overwhelmed at the houses they saw. Susan described them as the size of 2 dugouts square– they were dug out into the ground with particle board sides and tin laid on top. It was so pitiful. They began with songs. Then our students sat on the floor of the church – most of them had 2 children and colored, made animals from pipe cleaners, made bracelets, etc. It truly was a tender site. Language was not a barrier because they were loving those children beyond words. Many of the boys went outside for soccer – slowly the girls went out and blew bubbles, jumped rope, and colored with chalk. This went on for a couple of hours. We handed out suckers and then cookies. It was great! As our time came to an end – everyone got into a huge circle. Jimmy shared the gospel. We sang Alabare and Jesus loves you – and then the crosses and Bibles were presented. Tears were flowing from team members and children. They were begging us to return. In a few short hours they had bonded. Crosses and Bibles were also given to the Pastor and ladies that cooked. We had about 8 mothers there and they received one as well. They were thrilled! As we drove off – many children chased the bus. It was overwhelming. Our students have been so broken by the conditions in which others live as well as the sheer hunger for affection these children long for. They are radically being changed!

We came back to the hotel and had about an hour before dinner – tonight there is a surprise. The students gathered by the pool and were ready for a treat – and they got one! Jimmy took them upstairs where there were 3 giant piles of pizza boxes. He had a tray and told them pizza was different in Costa Rica – he took the napkin off and presented them with a pizza with rice and beans on top! Eyes got wide – he then said the 3 piles were rice and beans pizza with chicken, steak, or fish. There was silence – some said no way – then he laughed and said – meat lovers, pepperoni, or cheese! Everyone died laughing! Of course –no food should be wasted – so any ate the rice and beans sample as well!

During devotion time, Jimmy read Hebrews 6. He encouraged them that it is not possible for God to lie. He has promised eternal life and a relationship with Him. Jimmy is 34 years old. He told them that in life they will have things happen to them and wonder why. Our students have been so overwhelmed with why they were born in the states and these they have served are so impoverished. We must have faith that God is in charge of all things. He calls us to have unwavering faith. These with nothing are doing that - it is not as easy for us because we have so much that we depend so little. He said that during the tough times in life we turn our eyes to God. God has spoken truth – He does not lie – He is waiting for each of us to step into the truth He has spoke – Jimmy asked them if they would be willing to take His words as the reality that they are? The seniors love Jimmy – he was raised in Costa Rica and only has become fluent in English in the last two years. Often it is broken – and some words are a little off – but the kids are hearing him speak from the heart about true faith in God. You can see the intensity and sincerity in his eyes as he speaks. He is inspiring them to a much deeper level of trust and faith and the need to deny self and serve!

During our share time many reflected on their time with the kids. Since most only had two children – they had such personal experiences. One small girl when given a Bible asked to be read to. One student said tearfully – that she came to serve them and instead she was being so blessed. We brought suncathers to give the children and one girl asked Jimmy what they were for – he explained and she said – I do not have windows in my house – so humbling. Over and over again our team members are feeling extreme shame for how ungrateful they live.

One team member expressed how wonderful this week has been – she said I can’t remember the last time I was this excited to read Bible! Oh praise!!!!! Others were overwhelmed that families of 6 live in houses smaller than their bedrooms!

One person said that where these kids live is a place we would not even want to go into to get something out of. Others remarked on the joy the children exude – it is so contagious! The boys said they had been given nicknames by their new friends – Brandon was big Joey, Andrew F was gringo, and Jonathan was Joseno.

One of the girls said she had learned this week that even if we don’t think we have something to give we always have God’s love to give. Another said that God can break down barriers like language. The children did not get frustrated when they/we could not understand each other. One girl said she is not a “touchy feely” person – but this week has been open to physical affection – God broke through her barrier. Another – who has an aversion to runny noses – wiped a nose and dirty mouth of a child. Another was reminded of what she learned in Hosea 11 and that God’s love transcends everything and breaks down barriers (like kids/crafts).

One of the boys acknowledged how fascinated he was by Jimmy’s language – being able to speak Spanish today in sharing the gospel and English well enough to speak to each of our hearts in devotion time. He acknowledged that he wished he took his Spanish class more seriously – all agreed.

I then challenged the students to really reflect about all the profound things God has taught you - what is He speaking to their hearts? I reminded them that if

we say that today is just another fun day – we have “missed” what has happened over the last few days. God is at work in these students’ hearts – and He will continue to work. He has so much in His word and in your prayer life that He desires to share with you – I challenged them not to deny Him the time or opportunity for Him to continue to speak to them.

I wish I had a new adjective to describe this week - I think I cannot find one because it is so far beyond description. I did not get to post this on Thursday because I have had the privilege of spending some personal one on one time with students. We have shared our hearts. Many are wrestling through some issues and are having encouraging breakthroughs. Oh how I pray that individuals will step up and continue one on one disciple time with each of these guys and girls when we get home. God has begun such a powerful work in them! They need your prayers and support when they get home!!! Keep praying – we love you all and look forward to the opportunity for you to hear from each of them how God has exploded in their lives! Tomorrow we head to La Fortuna.

It is Saturday morning - I apologize for not posting again - our schedule has been so crazy - the students are doing amazing - thank you for all of the prayers - we are in La Fortuna - words cannot express how much every student in growing in their walk with the Lord - I wish I had time to write - but I will tonight or when we arrive home I will post things quickly. We definitely are going to plan a time of testimony - everyone is feeling great - prayers answered - we have no phone service - so Hunter Tyner Happy birthday - your sister really tried - but we will tonight - tomorrow we leave for the airport at 4 am - which will be 6 am your time - I have all ideas no one will go to bed tonight - but what is new! We love you all!

Again we woke to a beautiful morning – well – at least for 23 of our team members. Polly and Brandon were brutally victimized all night by the ick bug that has attacked. I am so thankful for the hotel we are in. We have been able to shift students into different rooms. We have been able to keep the sick children hydrated and separate, which has been a huge blessing. Susan graciously stayed behind and we felt safe leaving them while the rest of us loaded the bus for Abraham Project.

Courtney led our devotion – completing Philippians 1 she reminded us to keep in mind that Paul was imprisoned as he wrote this – Lauren, Erika, and Grace read the scripture – Paul said his relationship was so important – that good or bad – he wanted to exalt Christ - he was so in love and enamored and in connection with God – another point she made was that we are to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel – all actions and words should glorify Him – another challenge she issued was to model after his life in the fact that the most precious possession was his relationship with God and he was dedicated to living fully for God and ministering to those that may not believe – she examined other aspects of his life and truly challenged them to model after these

Today we were given the assignment of moving a mountain of dirt to 2 different locations – we had very rustic wheelbarrows, a couple of pick axes to loosen the dirt and clay, and shovels. We were filling in areas both on the playground and around a newly built road. Erika really enjoyed the pick ax – she tickled all of us the way she swung it and worked. Some of the team members decided to continue working of the nails. The team from UGA were sanding and finishing the wood. It was so neat to see the entire process of readying the facility. They certainly have a long way to go – but the buildings they have built are beautiful – and to know they are built from scraps is overwhelming!

We learned the stories behind several of the orphans. Many are horrible, abusive stories that we shutter to think exist. This place is truly a beacon of hope and light for the people in the area. The homes the children stay in are made of the same scrap wood and are so beautiful. Everything is taken care of and kept in perfect order.

During lunch our students sat with the UGA students – it was fun having them share about college. Victor sang again. He shared with us that he had been in a gang up until 6 years ago. He had been involved in alcohol and drugs and almost killed himself. He came to know the Lord – and has been living for him fully ever since. The countenance of joy on his face was just as radiant as yesterday. After lunch there was another soccer game - so much fun. Elizabeth and Polly decided to skip the game and have a little mountain climbing adventure - you will have to get them to tell you their crazy adventure.

Today, we had arts and craft time with the 7 – 12 year olds. It was fun and certainly under better control. Then we played soccer. Right before we departed, the seniors presented the crosses and Bibles to the children. It was very touching to see the bond they had developed in such a short time. The children were thrilled. They also went around to the daycare and other workers on site. The adults were overwhelmed with the gift of love! It was really hard to leave a place that has been so impactful in our lives.

After we left, they took us to a local market. The students bargained their way to many fine purchases. Then back to the hotel for clean-up. Brandon was better – he was ready for dinner. Polly decided she would see everyone in the morning. The group went to a local restaurant where the chickens were cooked on a pole over a big fire.

Everyone is exhausted! Today’s heat was much more intense and shoveling and hauling wheelbarrows will really take it out of you! Jimmy led our devotion after a fun game of chicken in the hen house. He read 1 Cor. 12:21 – 26 and discussed spiritual gifts and that some are more visible than others – but all are essential. Sometimes we feel behind the scene – all have their place – all are important. He then read the following:

1) if you think your gift is unimportant – repent for underestimating your worth

2) notice those among you that seem underappreciated – take matters in your own hand to discern problem – show you value their contribution to the fellowship – God will be pleased

We are a church and we need to encourage all members!

It was time to share the times the moments they felt the presence of the Lord in powerful ways. We then had a discussion similar to the previous night – individuals shared where they saw the hand of God. They are all seeing God’s provision – God at work – they are feeling his presence all around them! I love to see how personal this is for these seniors yet how connected they are to each other. They are so broken for those with nothing – especially those with no home. It is hard to be away from home – and yet – the thought of children that have no home to long for is just as difficult. God is pouring spiritual insight into these seniors. He is calling them to a higher level of faith – He is surrounding them with people like our guide Jimmy who has left a good job and is engaged in missions. On the brink of such a huge transition in their lives, God is calling them to a deeper relationship with Him and the need to minister and serve others. What a praise! Please keep praying for them. Many of you reading this are very close to these seniors. Get ready – the job of discipling them when they return involves you. They are going to need the encouragement, fellowship, and guidance, from you!

It was almost 11 when we finished. Most of the team called it a night – the rest played Catch Phrase. There is so much joy on their faces – I hope the photos give you a glimpse! Have a blessed day!

Part Two

To say that God has definitely been at work today would be a horrible understatement. Today, unknown to the other team members, He spoke deeply and personally to each team member. I am talking about the kind of movement of the Holy Spirit that unlocked the floodgates of tears for many of our members and stirred the hearts of all. The kind that demanded major hugs and love at the end of a team session I pray I never, ever forget!!!! I am so sorry that Dr. Brown and all those that have sacrificially given financially and physically for the school, prayed, and had faith that God called them to undergird DCS were not in the room to feel the power of the presence of God and to hear from our team how God exploded in their lives today. Please know our gratitude is sincere – we are humbled to be members of this team and filled with a fresh, indescribable joy that we never want to lose.

Jimmy opened the session reading 1 Corinthians 9:19-22 and encouraged the students to be relevant, to be identify with those we are serving.

Once he finished – I opened the floor for team members to answer any of the 3 challenge questions issued this morning:

1) Where did I feel the power of God’s presence today?

2) When did I respond to His call to model Christ?

3) What opportunity did I miss to share His love among teammates or those God placed in my path?

What ensued far surpassed my wildest imagination and left many of us speechless! I want to share with you some of the team’s discussion. I typed as they spoke – Katelyn W began the discussion and it did not stop – I have it in the order it happened – one comment after another – testifying to the power of God’s presence and the call they feel.

Katelyn – I saw the power of God’s presence working on pulling the nails from the wood and experiencing all of us working together to make a contribution to the building project

Erin – As we worked with those messed up rugged pieces of wood – I thought that it symbolized how God takes us – we are nothing, messed up and yet He makes us beautiful

Erika – I have experienced God in a powerful way as I have looked at nature – people look out of place here – there is such beauty in God’s creation – the US is not as natural – so much of our landscaped has been groomed by man – it is so much more exotic and you can really experience nature as He created it – I am in awe of the beauty

Elizabeth – right after you asked for us to be intuned to the place we felt the power of God’s presence in the most powerful way – we saw the highest mountain in this area – although it was a great distance away – you could see a cross on top – it really took me by surprise and I did feel God’s presence – Also – it was neat to see all the students from different schools and states working together for God – And, Jonathan has been great all day long – he worked so hard with wood, played soccer, and with the kids – he did great!

Chynna – I felt the presence of God most when the guy was singing – even though we have barriers in language – the music to united all of us as we all just praised God together

Lauren – I felt the power of God’s presence most during the singing also – the joy from heart was on His face

Susan – I hit thumb hard with a hammer and said praise the Lord! It was so wonderful to watch everyone working today - everyone did not have to do same thing – they were able to work on the task that they excelled – that is way Designer designed it – we have different people to reach – ages – groups – we need to be intuned to what God is saying –

Pansy –I loved the topsy turvy nature of arts and crafts – I know many had planned to hold a more organized VBS time – but as I looked in from the window – I saw intense joy on children’s face – you felt chaos – but they looked at each of you – they felt love – there was a little boy running around with Elizabeth’s glasses – Amber was consoling baby then Katelyn took over– in the midst of chaos you did God’s will – you made just today a little brighter for those sweet children

Katelyn – The time playing with the parachute and soccer was really fun

Maggie – As I looked at how the wood was being transformed I thought about how God shapes and molds us – just like that old wood can be made into what they need to build the buildings – He can make us what he desires – Spending that much time with the nails made me think about the nails on cross –

Courtney – no one wants to admit they missed an opportunity today – but as I was thinking about the 3 questions when I was working I thought that the minute you give 99% of 100 you missed 1% of an opportunity – we know all God has done for us and we should desire to give 115% – but every single day that we apply 99% or 80% or 50% we have missed that opportunity – our call is to be here 100% –

Frannie – I really liked working with the nails – There were many times I felt like giving up but I knew God would give you strength and He did

Andrew C – I have been amazed at God’s provision – like Elizabeth’s passport left on a table in the airport – we went back and it was there– We did not think that 3 guys could sleep in a double bed in Charlotte –but it all worked out – we went to the wrong hotel – it all worked out – there was no shuttle lined up – it all worked out – all is working out – I also want to encourage Jonathan he worked so hard and never got angry – and we played an intense soccer game – and he just went with the flow – it was really neat to watch!

Rob – I have never seen everyone work so hard – no one complained – everyone was calm – at school all we ever do is complain non stop – and we have it so good there – but here – it was hot, we worked hard – and no one complained – that really got to me

Jimmy – God knows how to weave people together to accomplish His will – you may not see it – if you want to see a sunrise – you have to wait – everyone was working hard – 3 groups that do not know each other working together accomplishing a common goal – it is very special

Karen –I worked on the same board almost all day – I know God wanted me to stick with this board all day and I finished it right before we stopped – I was overwhelmed with way all the students encouraged each other

Drew – I felt God’s presence when I prayed aloud for the first time since 2^nd grade – it was a real break through in my prayer life –

Andrew Fitz–we are all finding confidence – I really hope we can bring the teamwork and confidence back to the states – we don’t have much time left at DCS – I hope we will all make the sacrifice to take a stand – it is really hard for one to stand alone – but as a group we can work together

Erin - For me it was the way we all worked together – I really hope we can take this feeling back and share God’s love with people at school and at home– everyone was willing to help no matter what

Grace – we have really develop a sense of teamwork – at home we fight – here – we pushed all that aside – we have developed unity – you can sense it – it is cool to see it all working out – the key is taking it back – for us not to forget how we feel today -

Morgan – we don’t all get along at home – and yet today we were all singing and having fun together – it has been so great

Courtney – this environment is so different from home– there we are all about instant gratification and complacency – we expect so much – yet you come here – see the poverty – we take all that we have for granted – but He has given all of us so much and we should be giving back in response to all that He has given us – Today I really questioned why do I live in states and this child is an orphan here –why did you place me where I am

Andrew F– here we see people with nothing yet they give 100 times more for Christ

Courtney – I walked into the team room and saw all of the bags with backpacks – I thought – there is more in this room than in a 5 mile span – there are Northface backpacks, personal items, money etc – yet we are never happy with what we have – we always want more – yet how eye opening it is – yet you can see joy they have – deep joy –

Pansy – For me it was the man singing – I just sat there praising God for bringing me here – the glory of God was all over him – He was so full of the Spirit – this man may have nothing – but he has my joy!!!! That is what God wants to see come out of us – He wants us to spread His love to everyone! How can you look at that and not want it

Andrew F– our problem is that we don’t display it like that

Courtney – we should live high on Jesus – our lives should be so full of Him we physically do not have enough room – and it spills out on everyone – we are called to that every day – and yet who ever sees that overflowing from us

Jimmy – thing is that we follow man’s thinking more than God’s thinking – we think we have to wear name brands or act certain ways to be accepted - God’s thinking is everlasting –

Jonathan – I watched our team and the other 2 teams work all day under control and decided to model what I saw in others- I chose not to quit and not to get mad– I saw others set examples – I have to do the same

Grace – I often wonder why can’t be as happy as the guy that sang – then I realize I can - I have the same Spirit living in me – why are we so often ashamed to display the greatest thing in life which is God?

Andrew F – I came here and have seen in one day what my Christian life should look like

Amber – seeing all the college students on their spring break – by their choice was really something– they came to work for God – it really impressed me – it would not have before this but now it is so cool to see what they are choosing to do with their break and their time

Morgan – would we have given our spring break for this? We probably chosen the beach, which is only one hour away over this? That is so sad – look at we would have missed

Morgan – we complain so much– we want to do the least amount all the time

Lauren – I came here and have seen what living for Christ is really all about – it has caused a total change in my heart –

Pansy – our group worked so well today – each person found their place - Elizabeth at one point said I am too weak to pull this nail out and Lauren told her she could do it – Elizabeth pulled so hard her feet went off the ground – but she got it – teamwork and encouragement–

Courtney – we saw today the body of Christ – 1 Cor 12:12 - when all the body of Christ – works as should – orphans get a home – communities get ministered to – needs are met with the love of Christ

Chelsea W – I got sunscreen in my eye and feel like I missed working time trying to get my eyes rinsed

Immediately the entire team started encouraging Chelsea about how hard she had worked and how great she was as goalie – they are all so unified!

Maggie – we had lots of fears before we came – our fears were so big – I prayed so much – God has taken care of all our needs and fears – I am so glad to see all that I have

Rob – Right now we are being told go to school – get a good job – but I was impressed with the girl that has chosen to leave all of that and take a 7 month internship – It said a lot to see a girl coming to serve like that

Lauren – I have been on many trips – I have never felt such closeness – never felt such unity in a team –

Andrews C agreed – it is so good to lean on each other – and I am really proud of Jonathan and everyone for how hard they are working and how much fun we are having together

Jonathan – I cannot wait to work tomorrow

God so desires to do exceedingly more than we think or ask. He has certainly proven that already. There was a lot of discussion on how they intend to live out the final nine weeks as seniors. I am excited. There are many more testimonies that took place – they are very personal so I will let them come home and share them on their own. God is at work – you better believe it. Hugs and tears flowed – fellowship so precious among brothers and sisters of Christ. Words fail. But what I can tell you is that the Spirit was raining down on that room – and every member there experienced the power of His amazing presence.

After we had time in prayer everyone dispersed for a game of catch phrase except one team member. We prayed together, wept together, and shared our hearts. Afterwards, I went by the pool and fell on my knees weeping in prayer. I was praising God over and over humbled that He would allow me the precious privilege of being here when I heard Him speak to my heart in a very real way – Revival – Revival – Revival! It is 24 hours later when I am typing – again I am crying and covered in chill bumps. Oh yes – our God is real – oh yes He works in powerful ways – and oh yes – these seniors are seeing His glory all around them and they are being changed! Alabare’ a mi Senor – I praise my Lord! Keep on praying!

I am so excited to describe the “visible” events today. This will be part one. Part two will be a powerful description of the unseen – the way the power of the Spirit was at work in the individual lives of these seniors. Enjoy.

What a beautiful day! I must confess – this trip is different – we are staying at a nice hotel with a beautiful pool. The rooms are certainly not extravagant, but they are much nicer than the 2 previous trips. I was not aware of our lodging arrangements until about a month ago and immediately felt guilt that we were not staying in a remote, rustic area. However, this is the “home headquarters” for all groups that work with Joshua Expeditions and I trust their program. Of course I have worried what people would say – that this is not a “real” mission trip. All of these thoughts I now realize were just Satan’s tactics to make me worry and keep me from fully trusting God. Several of the team members had issues right before we left and I was not sure they would all come. Again, Satan was trying to distract. But Satan received a horrible defeat today and God has clearly expressed that our thoughts will never be His thoughts and our ways are certainly not His. This is the longest blog I have ever written, and the reason that at a very late hour I conceded that it would be a two part blog. But God is sovereign – He knows exactly when part two needs to be posted. This blog is one I hope you will find time to read every word. I have chills going up my arms and tears in my eyes as I type. I only pray the Spirit will give me the words to share with you. This has been the one of the most amazing days of my entire life. God has been present in a way that I know - from their own confessions - that our entire team has NEVER experienced before in their lives. Many of you are dedicated to praying for this team – let me tell you – God is responding! Please keep it up! We need prayer warriors standing in the gap – because God is at work in the hearts of these students like nothing I have ever witnessed!

Our team began the morning with a wonderful breakfast with fresh fruit, eggs, and French toast. We quickly gathered our supplies and headed for the Abraham project. It took about 45 minutes to get to the work site – so we had our team devotion as we traveled. Over and over I am encouraging these students that this trip is a divine appointment – and everyday their actions, reactions, effort, and attitude will largely impact how well they fulfill their individual and collective call. Our team is going to study the book of Philippians while we are away so Erika and Polly read the first 18 verses. From this – 2 charges were issued:

1) From verse 9 & 10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, I really encouraged the students to seek knowledge, insight, and discernment for why they were called to Costa Rica. We talked about the inexpressible joy we have in Christ – and that we are to model Him with our lives – I charged them to seek Him – grown in wisdom and discernment and desire to live lives that bring Him honor – I am really praying for them to have spiritual discernment and that they will desire to engage in those things that are best for their lives – please add that to the list of requests -

2) Then from verse 18 - But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. I encouraged them that they were here to share Christ – and with that came an attitude of rejoicing! No matter what the weather, exhaustion, homesickness, details that go awry – that we are going to rejoice – we are going to display Christ-like attitudes – we are going to show through our work ethic and actions the love of Christ!

I then told the team to be prepared tonight to answer 3 questions that are similar to ones I have been challenged weekly to answer to a precious accountability group I am blessed to serve with at home. These are:

1) Where did I feel the power of God’s presence today?

2) When did I respond to His call to model Christ?

3) What opportunity did I miss to share His love among teammates or those God placed in my path?

Courtney closed the time praying that God would break our hearts today and open our eyes to what He had before us today.

We arrived at Abraham Project and were explained the history of the facility. It was given the name because it has been built totally on faith in the one true God we serve. Thirteen years ago, a preacher had a vision to build and orphanage and daycare in an area infiltrated with prostitution, gangs, and poverty. His church acquired 2 ½ acres and began praying for provision of materials to build. Public schools in this area only meet ½ day so there was a lot of time for the children to fall into trouble. They were slowly able to build a children’s home and meeting facility. Then in 2001, a glass company agreed to donate all the scrap wood. We would deem this scrap wood as total junk – boards filled with nails and many are very worn. However, what we may see as junk – they saw as provision and this opened the door for major building projects. A 2x4 in Costa Rica is $6 – 8.00. Volunteers – like us – come in and take these long, donated, scrap pieces and begin pulling rusted nails, and tacks from the boards. They sand the boards, spray them with a varnish, and take what we would deem as scrap and turn it into a beautifully stained piece of wood – from that, they have built 2 homes, a school, a Fellowship Hall that is used for church, and are currently building another large facility for meetings, etc. Every day volunteer lawyers, doctors, dentist, and counselors come and use part of the facility to help those in the area. The children’s homes are for abandoned children and they can hold 10 children each. These are set up like 2 homes with missionary house parents in each one. They structure the homes like a family and the children live there until adoptions are arranged. In addition, they have opened the school facility for daycare for those in the area. Families pay what they can afford. The church is a non-denominational church and the pastor is paid through another organization. He challenges all those that work there to trust God’s provision and they have all grown mightily because of the faith he displays.

At night, the buildings are used for vocational school with classes like computers and cosmetology. The facility is beautiful – and how they have used those scrap pieces of wood is something you need to see. Anyone that loves beautifully stained woodwork would be in awe! Exposed beams gave each building such beauty. Mountains are in the distance of the facility – it is unreal! This ministry is partnering with volunteer groups like DCS to put a roof over abandoned children’s heads. Children who have been abused, left at the hospital, deemed unwanted. Our team will provide about seven hours a day for two days times 25 people in work. The savings in manpower is such a blessing to them.

Abraham Project is meeting the physical and spiritual needs of the people in the community by sharing Christ and equipping them with skills to have successful jobs. They recently purchased 2/12 adjacent acres. The church had been praying for this land for 6 years – but it was owned by several children in one family. They finally decided to sell – but wanted $700,000. The preacher talked and prayed and talked and prayed and the family finally agreed on $300,00.00. However, they did not have even that. A couple came with their church to serve for one week. They were so moved by all the work this ministry is doing that they gave 325,000.00 for the land and a new van – money they had saved to build a home. PROVISION – YES! GOD AT WORK – YES! Robert told the students that although they may not leave 300,000.00 - each of them had something to give in response to what God wanted to do in their lives not only there but in their future. He said that often people in the United States are not challenged to seek God’s provision and direction. It was about them listening for His voice and being obedient. It was very powerful to listen to him tell several amazing times God had provided for the needs of the ministry. He continued to share that we need to seek Him. He said that God has called each of us to give toward His Kingdom and His purposes. God desires to use each! (Note the recurring theme from our devotion – God is so cool how He orchestrates messages to us if we are listening – trust me – the students were listening!)

We were then led to our work stations. Everyone wore gloves, got a hammer, screw driver, and other tools to assist in extracting the nails. No piece of metal could stay in these nail filled boards – each one had to be pounded or pulled out. It was much more involved than you would think. Just ask Karen – she spent hours on one board! And you should have seen our students – they worked so diligently! The task would seem senseless in the states – but here – seeing how they were transforming these worn out boards – we were inspired! Two other teams were on site. The University of Georgia and Auburn both had teams working alongside of us. What a witness! College students using their spring breaks for missions – I am sure you are beginning to see many spiritual truths that the Lord was pouring into our seniors. I can’t wait to type part two! The sun was tough but there was a breeze. We worked until noon and then broke for a devotion and special music. This was a moving moment a highlight that moved all of us. A gentleman shared words of encouragement and shared scripture on not being anxious. Again – a message over and over for our seniors! How cool to hear it in this setting. Then he sang “I will sing of His love forever.” Of course, he sang in Spanish – we know the tune so we could follow the words. The Spirit filled that meeting hall. Never, ever in any of our lives have we seen someone sing with such inexplicable joy! I am talking about the kind of joy that spilled over in the room – the kind that was so full within him that it had to burst forth – the contagious kind – the kind that We Want! Then, the project made us ham, rice, beans and a salad for lunch.

After lunch, all three teams, DCS, Georgia, and Auburn played a pick-up game of soccer. It was intense! Our students and the college students had such a great time playing – and the crowd was very energetic. It was fun to watch everyone interact so well! Jonathan, Brandon, Andrew, Erin, Courtney, Chelsea, Amber, played with all their hearts. Chelsea W was the goalie – and you should have seen her – nothing got past her! Time to go back to work! The boys stayed and played soccer with the 7 – 12 year old boys and the girls blew bubbles and played with a parachute and balls. Some team members went back to pulling nails. It was great watching our students fully engage in this ministry – they gave it their all!

Then VBS time. Today they gave us the 3 year olds – talk about chaos – there was very little interpreting and the kids were wild. It was a mixture of humor and frustration – we had planned so long for this time – we usually have older students. But the kids had a ball – they just loved the way the team loved them! What a lesson – that we can plan and plan and plan – but in the end we must serve in the way God orchestrates. Our team did it well! I am intentionally leaving off what today meant to us – the real story is in part two of this blog in the team member’s own words.

It was 4 o’clock – time to leave. Amber sat in the front seat going home and led songs over the microphone. She was entertaining. The bus driver turned on the radio to get them to stop – it was hilarious! We all took showers and headed off to dinner. Unfortunately, the stomach virus claimed 2 more victims. Please pray for Brandon and Polly – and that we will not continue to share this ugly illness! In addition, please pray for protection over the other team members!

Dinner was great – another local dinner and local rice and beans, chicken, fish or a burger. Drew said the blessing – yes – for the first time since 2^nd grade – he prayed aloud – the team loved it – and he loved it. It was wonderful! The girls got more than got the silly giggles – they were doing impersonations and laughing hysterically – it was so much fun to watch. Unity growing!

On the way home – they practiced all of their Praise Concert songs – Mrs. McCormick would be proud! There is so much more – so, so much more! I do not know when part two will be posted – but certainly by tonight. Please continue to pray, pray, pray! Pray for our work, pray for this ugly virus, pray for our witness, pray for God to continue to work in the lives of the students. We love ya’ll and are so thankful for this opportunity. Keep praying!

Yes – this is the day we have truly anticipated all year! Our team met in the lobby at 4:30 a.m. for a quick bite and off to the airport. We arrived with little hassle and were delighted with the check-in process. Everything went smoothly until the attendant decided to give Drew a particularly hard time. Our sweet, mild mannered Drew almost got mad – who knew!!! Time for Cinnabons! They were wonderful. Before boarding – the team made a circle right among the other passengers and Andrew F led us in prayer. We loaded the airport with several first time flyers with VERY wide eyes!!! There were many seat changes to get everyone settled and close to someone they were comfortable flying with. I am not sure I can convey the anxiety that has been rising in many of these students over the last few months – and had truly escalated to a fear that made their nerves go crazy. But let me tell you – prayer works – they did great – and in fact – they all have the travel bug – they loved it! We flew out at 7 am and landed in Atlanta. We were fortunate that our next flight was in the same terminal – we had about 40 minutes – so it was just enough time to connect – then the wait. We sat on the plane for about 30 minutes. There was at team from Mississippi State going on a mission trip in Costa Rica in another area and they held the plane for them. Isn’t it great how many people are serving the Lord and boldly sharing His Word.

The flight to Costa Rica was about 4 hours. Everything went great – most of the student’s slept. Morgan had a stomach virus and was sick all day - but she was a trooper and went everywhere with the team. Going through customs was simple – everyone got a stamp in their passports. The Joshua Expedition guide met us at the gate and we loaded up on our bus and headed to lunch. Jimmy Lopez is our guide – he grew up in Costa Rica and is so knowledgeable.

Joshua Expeditions creates trips, which include both mission work for their teams as well as educational exploration of the culture you are visiting. I have loved the rustic nature of the last 2 years but felt we had traveled so far that it would be nice to see more of the country we were visiting. I think the students are really going to enjoy the combination this year.

Jimmy took us to a local restaurant where they served us chicken, fish, or steak, rice and beans, and fries. Many of the students tried local pineapple sodas and the cokes taste much sweeter. Erika prayed and the team was more than ready to eat! All our meals are paid for by Joshua Expeditions except the first lunch– so this one was ours. When the bill came for 125,000 ml we got a good laugh. Jimmy explained that $1.00 US dollar is equal to 500 ml colones. It was 10.00 a person including drink and tip – not bad.

We came to our hotel, which is very nice. The group really just wanted to stay and sleep – but we had a tour lined up. Jimmy took us to a manufacturing facility for wood. After wood is cut – it is cured for 13 years before they begin the process of making many of the crafts they sell at the markets. Then it is cut in various forms. They had barrels and barrels of round, flat, square, etc pieces ready to be made into a variety of artwork. He took us all through the factory and we saw huge tumblers lined with sandpaper that buffed the wooden pieces, then it is taken to ladies that sort it for quality. These pieces are individually drilled with tiny holes so they can be turned into jewelry. We walked through many rooms of ladies making necklaces, belts, wind chimes, door art, etc. Then we saw a master carver who carved large sculptures out of the wood. It was truly fascinating to get such a personal tour of this plant. I am sure you will see many of the girls wearing wooden earrings, bracelets, and more! Jimmy said that the average factory worker makes 100 – 125 dollars a week. He said that is an average income. He said those that make $1000.00 a month a the wealthy ones. Of course there are exceptions like those in real estate or international business – but that gives you and idea of the economy.

We drove through many impoverished areas in San Jose going to the factory. Gas is $5.00 a gallon. The tombs are all above ground. There are beautiful trees blooming and the city is busy! We went to another local restaurant and were served a good meal including local slaw, rice, beans, plantain, and fried roots. Grace prayed and everyone served their plates from a buffet. The team had mixed emotions about the taste – but they were good sports! It was at this point the lack of sleep took over. We had our team debriefing for our mission work tomorrow on the bus ride home. It was obvious that everyone had hit the wall.

The phone cards that Joshua Expeditions sent are not working. We hope to have those fixed tomorrow afternoon. The team phone needed a pin code – and thanks to skype – I was able to get Thomas to call the company and get the code. Technology – it is really amazing. Some of the members needed to talk to home.

Tomorrow we will go to an orphanage called Abraham’s project. It is about 40 minutes away. Jimmy explained we will be working with about 50 - 75 children from about 1 year old up to about 8. About half live in the orphanage and the other half are in daycare. There are many ongoing construction projects – so it should be a busy day.

It has been an incredibly long day – but one I know many will never forget. I think the team motto will be “God is sovereign!” He has indeed carried us to this point – He has gone before us in many of the details today and we are anticipating what He has planned for us tomorrow. Henry Blackaby wrote, “Every event God allows into your life is designed to make you more like Christ.” That is so my prayer for this team. God has certainly blessed us with the privilege to come serve others, see His beautiful world, and spend time in fellowship with Him and other believers. Please pray for God to work in a very personal way in each of the 25 team members lives. My prayer is that they will be drawn into sweet fellowship with Him, and they will each grow personally more and more in love with their Creator. Blackaby went on to write, “Our Heavenly Father knows exactly what we will face today and next week. He is eager for us to experience Him as He provides for us.” That is it – as He continues to provide every one of our needs on this journey – please pray that these students will not only be bold and authentic as they share, but that they will EXPERIENCE HIM! Thank you for your prayers!

3:00 p.m. – The cars began pouring into the DCS parking lot! What excitement – there were MULTIPLE passport and luggage checks. We set the school alarm off – TWICE – yes the cops came. Finally, all the cars were packed and we went to the chapel for a time of prayer with family, staff, and loved ones. Mr. Davis led the team in prayer. Final hugs – and off to Charlotte.

The trip was perfect until we arrived in Charlotte – and then the comedy of errors began. First – we arrived at the wrong Wingate Inn – no problem – Drew punched the correct address in the GPS – We arrive, however the manager had failed to line up our shuttle, register us for leaving our cars, and did not order our bag breakfast. Still –ok – let’s go eat. First we went to Shulamar’s – there was a really long line and an interesting smell. Chili’s was the next choice and again we turned to Drew’s GPS – but this time it did not work so well – it took us to the airport Chili’sJ Well – at least we know the way – so we voted on Cracker Barrel – and it was wonderful. We had a brief team meeting and Katelyn, Morgan, and Frannie led the team in a devotion on “fear not”. Fear of flying and leaving home has been such an issue with many in this group – the devotion was very encouraging – “So do not fear for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God.” Isaiah 41:10

Time for bed – well – maybe not – the nerves took over and Andrew, Andrew, Rob, Jonathan, Brandon, and Drew decided to play cards most of the night. Frannie, Morgan, Amber, Erika, and Courtney went to the pool, Chelsea W could not sleep, and before you knew it – Elizabeth’s 2:30 alarm clock was buzzing – time for showers.

It is hard to find words to describe reaching this point in our journey. So many things have led us to the time to go on missions in Costa Rica. DCS Class of 2011 began their senior year seeking the Lord’s leading for their mission trip. As the Lord made His call clear to Costa Rica, He also led them to Joshua Expeditions. This organization has been such a blessing to work with. They booked our flights, made our lodging arrangements, organized our mission work, and planned our excursions.

So many generous individuals responded to the support letters and fund raising. This process is such a faith journey for each class and the Lord has taught this class to truly put their complete trust in Him. He has shown them that His grace is sufficient for them because His power is made perfect in our weakness!!! 2 Corinthians 12:9

Two weeks ago, the seniors went to Camp Rockfish in Maxton, NC for a team building retreat. Doug Newton led the morning devotion and presented the team with beautiful yarn crosses, which were made by Lauren Tyner’s great grandmother’s sewing group. They made over 300 maroon and gold crosses, praying for each individual recipient and gave the seniors one to wear and the rest to present to DCS. It was a very powerful moment. Mr. Newton had each student take a cross and put it over a classmate’s neck while saying, “Jesus Loves You!” It was great! They spent the remainder of the day performing many tasks that challenged them to work together to accomplish the assigned goal. The laughter and excitement truly was contagious! I was so proud of how all of the members engaged in the activities and they were all very conscientious to make sure that everyone was successful.

Last week, Pastor James Orr came to school and began teaching the students Spanish children’s songs. They learned Jesus Loves Me, I Praise Him, Father Abraham, If Your Happy & You Know it, etc. Then he taught them the sinner’s prayer. It has been a blessing to see them truly desire to connect with those they are going to serve. Many are already dreading leaving the children – and they have not even met them. They so long to express the love of Jesus to the children. The boys busily gathered sports equipment while the girls prepared for VBS craft time. It was so much fun.

Wednesday, a commissioning service was held in the chapel. 7^th – 12^th grades came as both the local and foreign teams were commissioned. Michael Sapp shared from Acts 4 where Peter and John went before the Sanhedrin and said in verse 20, “We cannot help speaking about what we have seen an heard.” Michael challenged the students to be Bold and Authentic! The seniors sang a few of their Spanish songs. Pastor Orr then led the entire student body to lay hands on the seniors as he prayed for their mission work. As the students left, the senior class put cross necklaces around everyone’s neck. Later, they held a similar ceremony with the K – 6^th grade students.

Friday, Jim Atkins and Kay McGuirt came and blessed the students with words of encouragement on ministering to foreign countries. They described opportunities they had in leading others to Jesus. Their visit was a true blessing! So many people in the community have prayed and encouraged this team. We are in awe in what God has already done! He is an Awesome God. We are blessed to be going and serving our Lord – it is a humbling privilege! We cannot wait until Sunday!

14 Days and Counting!

Joshua 1:9 states, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

In just two short weeks our journey will begin! We are so excited to see God work in countless ways in the upcoming weeks. Our prayer is that our hearts will be open to see God's hands do mighty things as we follow Him into a new and exciting place. Please pray that we will make an impact on the people of Costa Rica and that through this experience our hearts will be broken as we see the unexpected and experience God in an entirely new way.
